Classic Car MOT and Vehicle Tax

According to the UK government website, ‘Classic Cars,’ also known as ‘Historic Vehicles,’ under certain circumstances do not require an MOT and can also be exempt from ‘Vehicle Tax.’

MOT

The rules around MOTs depend on when the car was first registered. An MOT is not required, if the car was registered more than 40 years. As of writing, 2025, this would apply to cars first registered before 1985. This comes with some caveats. For example, the car must not have gone under any ‘substantial changes’ in the last 30 years which include replacing the chassis, body, axles or engine. This also includes changes to the way the vehicle operates. All ford Anglia models are exempt from MOT unless they have undergone the aforementioned changes.

Vehicle Tax Exemption

The government states that “If your vehicle was built before 1 January 1985, you can stop paying vehicle tax from 1 April 2025. If you do not know when your vehicle was built, but it was registered before 8 January 1985, you do not need to pay vehicle tax from 1 April 2025.” If you are unsure, visit the above link for further details.
